<h1>REMEDIAL METHODS</h1>
<h2>ROOT BARRIERS</h2>
<p><img src=imagespage/rootbarrier1.jpg align=right>One of the major reasons that a building's foundations subside is the drying out and subsequent shrinkage of the soil underneath.
<p>The major cause of loss of moisture in soil is that of trees that have spread their root system toward the building.
<p>Installing a root barrier cuts the roots off and then prevents the roots from spreading again in that direction.
<p>With the moisture-absorbing roots no longer an issue, the moisture builds up again in the soil through natural rainfall and/or artificial addition of water, and the soil expands again. This often leads to foundations returning fully to their normal position.
<p>However, sometimes a small amount of remedial work may also be required to compliment this process.
<h2>UNDERPINNING</h2>

At each position indicated by the engineer's detailed design:
<ul>
<li>A hole is drilled beside the existing footing with an excavation under the existing footing of the building
<li>Reinforcing is installed and the hole and head cavity under the existing footing are filled with concrete
<li>Once the concrete has cured to specification a powerful jack is fitted between the head and the existing footing to raise the footing and wall etc back to its original position
<li>The gap is packed in order to permanently support the building in it's original position

<h2>Personal profile - Ian Herring</h2>
<p>Ian Herring has a quantity surveying background with over 35 years experience in the building industry.
<p>As a director of Underpinning Queensland Pty Ltd he plays a pivotal role in
the development and management of our office systems and the day to day
running of our office and staff.
<p>One of Ian's major focuses is keeping clients informed of the various stages
throughout the project.
<p>Ian has been a BSA (Building Services Authority) licenced Open Class Builder
since 1986 and is knowledgeable not only with the underpinning business, but
also with the legislative requirements of the business.
<h2>Personal profile - Terry O'Connor</h2>
<p>Terry O'connor is a registed house and commercial builder and is a carpenter/joiner by trade.
<p>Terry has over 30 years of experience within the building industry.
<p>As a director of Underpinning Queensland Pty Ltd. Terry is responsible for onsite works, organising staff, machinery, etc., including working with our clients to keep them informed throughout the process as well as keeping a tidy and safe work place.
<p>He also plays a shared roll in business development and marketing.
